Official Nottingham Forest retro shirt - The first European Cup (1979)
In 1977, following the promotion in the first division, the couple Clough and Taylor built what will be an incredible team. Thanks to the defense and the goalkeeper Shilton the team suffers only 24 goals, in which the Forest conquers the title of First Divison, preceding the European champions of Liverpool.
In the 1978-79 season the Forest competes in Europe and buys Francis Trevor for £ 1 million (crazy spending at the time), but it can not be used until the final.
In the first round the Forest will face the champions of Europe in charge of Liverpool. The reds have in the squadlist Keegan, Souness, Dalglish, but it is the bet of Brian Clough to be guessed. The young Garry Birtles scores 1-0 and Nottingham will close the game by winning 2-0. With the 0-0 return to Anfield the Forest overcomes the first difficult obstacle and begins his climb to the final. In the semifinals one of the most beautiful Champions League matches is played: Nottingham Forest-Cologne. After 20 minutes the Cologne wins 2-0, but Nottingham pulls out all the grit sent by their coach and comeback 3-2. In the last minutes, thanks to the tiredness, the Cologne draws 3-3. In the return the Forest disputes the perfect match, and despite the defensive attitude of the Germans, Nottingham scores 30 minutes from the end.
The final is played against the Malmo at the Olympiastadion in Munich. Clough field 3 attackers, including Trevor Francis who will repay with a head goal that will write history.
Nottingham Forest is European Champion. In just three seasons, the guys of Clough have moved from the Second Division of England to win the European Cup, and become a real case study in football.
Nottingham Forest remains unbeaten in Europe and will also win the League Cup.
But there is still another page of history to write: the European Cup 1979-80.
