Panama retro football shirt
On April 4, 1976, the Panama national team played their first match of qualification for a World Cup.
In Panama City it was played Panama-Costa Rica: the first world cup qualifying match Concacaf for Argentina '78.
Panama went into the field with a 4-2-4: Agustín Muquita Sánchez and Néstor Hernández on the wings, Cascarita Tapia as the central forward.
When the teams went to rest, Costa Rica led 1-0. In the second half Federico Ponce entered the field, 10 minutes after Tapia scored the equalizer with a "sombrero charro". Ponce and Maquita completed the "remuntada".
It was an historic victory, an historic match for Panama, which won 3-2 but despite this did not qualify for the 1978 World Cup.
The Panamanian national team will debut in the final round of a World Cup thirty years later, at Russia 2018.
