Iranian football had its best moment in the 70s, whe the national football team won the Asian Cup three times in a row (1968, 1972, 1976), and did the first historic participation in a World Cup in 1978.
Iran national team had to wait twenty years to return to play the final stage of the competition.In 1990 the Iranian football nation re-emerged, after the war, to play for the qualification games to 1990 World Cup in Italy. Unfortunately, however, it was eliminated in favor of China. But in the same year, at the Asian Games in Beijing in 1990, Iran won the football tournament.

In 1998 Iran will participate in the World Cup organized in France, playing a historic match with a strong political significance against the USA: the first victory in a world championship for the Iranians.
