Atletico de Madrid was a very succesful team in the Spanish league during the seventies. The team won 3 league titles in that decade. Players included Garate (Pichichi winner in 1970 and 1971), Luis Aragonés, Ratón Ayala, Pereira, Leivinha and Cacho Heredia.
Atletco reached the final of the European Cup in 1974. They lost against a lucky Bayern Munich that equalised in the last minute of the Heysel final after a fantastic curling free-kick by Luis Aragonés.
The president of the Club, Vicente Calderón, baptised the team as el "Pupas" because of this final.
